St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Phoenix
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade began in the year 1984. This year marks the beginning of a yearly tradition in Phoenix. The main purpose of this event is to enhance and preserve the traditions and heritage of the Irish Culture by sharing it to the people of Arizona.
Celebrating 30 Years
This year’s event carries a theme: “The Gathering 2013: Back to Our Roots and Traditions.” The event will take place on March 16, 2013, Saturday at ten in the morning. It will start at the 3rd Street at Sheridan and proceeds south to McDowell.
During the parade, you can expect around fifty thousand people to line the 3rd Street in Phoenix to enjoy the parade. The parade features bagpipers, fire vehicles, government dignitaries, police vehicles, Irish step dancers, marching bands, and most of all, the Arizona Irish Colleen with her Court. This year’s Grand Marshall is Bob Smith, the president and CEO of Alliance Beverage whose ancestors hailed from Counties Down, Cork and Galway.
Irish Family Fair
The Irish Family Fair will begin right after the parade. The spectators of the parade will then move to the location of the Irish Family Fair for the rest of the day. There will be two stages of live Irish music, Bagpipers, and Irish Step dancing during the event. The fair will begin at 10:30 in the morning and ends at about 5:00 in the afternoon. It will be held at the Irish Cultural Center at 1106 North Central Avenue (west side of Central Avenue at Culver) next to Margaret T. Hance Deck Park.
